Drug consumption in Lebanon increases

An-Nahar newspaper said on Tuesday that the US State Department published its annual report on combating drugs smuggling worldwide, in which it stated “Lebanon is not one of the main countries producing drugs or trading it. However, drugs consumption among Lebanese youth has increased.”

Most of the opium and cannabis production fields in the Bekaa Valley were destroyed, added the report.

It also said that the Lebanese Internal Security Forces (ISF) prioritized fighting terrorism in 2009, which put trying to find and dismantle drug rings in Lebanon on the back burner.

“There is still drugs smuggling across the Lebanese, Syrian and Israeli borders,” the report added.
